Proxemics is the study of how distance effects communication. Have you ever had someone come uncomfortably close to you in a bus, elevator, or line? We all have had 'invasions' of our personal space from time to time as we go about our daily routines. Our personal space is an imaginary 4 foot circle that surrounds us. When people encroach on that space, we will generally have a higher awareness of that person who is now in our space.
Take a look at the defined areas in the picture to the left. What are the names and distances of the other areas represented? What is the closest level of space in communication? Why is this so? Also, how aware are you of people in your public space at a meal in a restaurant? |
